Benefits Of Purchasing Rats From Breeders
If you’re looking to bring home a pet rat, turning to a breeder may be your best option for several reasons.
- There are many types of rats – Getting a rat at a pet store will likely yield you a standard rat — not a bad thing, but definitely not unique. Breeders breed a variety of different rats that come in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes. This allows you to find the exact type of rat that you want.
- Breeder rats are well-cared for – Pet store rats are often mistreated due to the nature of the businesses that sell them. Rats from breeders, on the other hand, commonly receive much more care. Not only do breeders have a great passion for rats, but the health of their rats is also directly tied to their income. Breeders with unhealthy rats wouldn’t last very long.
- Breeder rats’ pedigrees are known – Every good breeder will have extensive records of each of their rat’s genetic histories. This allows you to know what rats you’ll get if you attempt to breed your rat, in addition to knowing if your particular rat is vulnerable to particular diseases.
Identifying A Good Rat Breeder
Rats can be susceptible to several diseases and health problems, especially if they come from bad breeders. The best rat breeders take excellent care of their rats and keep detailed lineage/genetic records.
If you’re purchasing a rat from a breeder, you must do your research. Backyard breeders are much more likely to neglect the needs of their rats.
Once you find a rat breeder, you have to do a bit of vetting. There are some questions that you should ask them to verify that you’re supporting a good business and getting a healthy rat:
- May I see your rats’ living conditions?
- Do you have references for previous buyers?
- Can you provide me with your rats’ genetic histories?
- Do you provide birth certificates with details about the parents?
- What food do you feed to the rats as babies and adults?
- Am I allowed to interact with the rat in person first?
- Do you keep sick/nursing rats separate?
- Can you answer any other questions I may have about rat care?
